Common Job Interview Questions and How to Answer Them

December 3, 2024

Most interviews revolve around the same handful of questions. Prepare for these and you'll walk in calm, focused and ready to impress.

“Why do you want this job?”

Connect your skills and goals to the specific role and company. Show you've done your homework — mention something concrete about their product, mission or team.

“What is your greatest strength?”

Pick a strength that's directly relevant to the role, then back it up with a quick example and result. Evidence beats adjectives every time.

“What is your greatest weakness?”

Choose a real but non-fatal weakness and, more importantly, describe how you're actively improving it. Self-awareness and growth are what interviewers reward here.

“Tell me about a challenge you overcame.”

Use the STAR method — Situation, Task, Action, Result. Keep the situation brief and spend most of your answer on the action you took and the measurable result.

“Where do you see yourself in five years?”

Show ambition that aligns with the role and company, without sounding like you'll leave in a year. Focus on growing your skills and taking on more responsibility.

“Do you have any questions for us?”

Always say yes. Ask about the team, success in the role, or next steps. Thoughtful questions signal genuine interest.

Practice makes it effortless

Rehearse your answers out loud until they feel conversational. For the classic opener, see how to answer “tell me about yourself”, and learn how to prepare step by step.
