How to Write a Follow-Up Email After an Interview

April 8, 2025

A brief, well-timed thank-you note keeps you top of mind and shows professionalism. Surprisingly few candidates send one — which makes it an easy way to stand out.

When to send it

Send your follow-up within 24 hours of the interview, while the conversation is fresh for both of you. If you interviewed with several people, send a short, individual note to each.

What to include

A simple template

“Hi [Name], thank you for taking the time to meet with me today. I enjoyed learning about [specific topic] and I'm even more excited about the [role] at [company]. My experience with [relevant skill] lines up closely with what you're looking for, and I'd welcome the chance to contribute. Please let me know if there's anything else I can share. Best, [Your name].”

Keep it short and sincere

A few thoughtful sentences beat a long message. Proofread carefully — a clean, error-free note reinforces the professional impression you made in person.

Finish strong

The follow-up is the last impression you leave. Pair it with solid interview preparation and confident body language for the full package.
